A GUIDE TO THE PREVAILING RATES FOR AND TREATMENT OF MODELS AND ARTISTES IN KENYA

Following an agreement between Casting/Modeling Agencies and agents assigned below, we would like it to be known to all our current and prospective clients that we have jointly issued a guideline of standard fees expected for our registered models and artistes. Please note that there is room for negotiation depending on each job, but we would like you to pass this information on to any of your clients when putting together budgets as we all feel it is time that model and talent fees become more standardized.

The higher end of the scale is applicable to advertising for brands such as alcohol, tobacco, sanitary towels and condoms as well as Corporate/International clients and skin/hair care products with a high profile. These rates are also applicable when using top models or celebrities.

Surazuri Casting and Consultancy Ltd, Roma Agency, Real Concepts Ltd, Artistica and Versatile Models all charge clients a 10% service charge. The only instances where this service charge will be waived, is in the event of these agencies acting as 'Casting Agent/Director' where a fixed fee is applicable (see end of this document). The remaining casting agents work mainly as Casting Directors and charge a fixed fee.

The breakdown will also depend on the number of people appearing on the advertisement.

  • G9+ - Groups of 9 or more people
  • G5-8 - 5-8 people
  • G2-4 - 2-4 people G1 - 1 person

The terms "model", "artiste" and "talent" are used interchangeably and mean the same thing.

The above rates are based on a scheduled one-day shoot (one day being counted as within 12 hours from call time until wrap). If the shoot is scheduled for more than one day, a daily rate of KShs 8,000 - 10,000 should be paid on top of the original figure for Featured Extras, Semi-principles and Principles. Extras should be paid double as soon as 12 hours are exceeded.

Factors influencing payments for TVC'S include the product/brand, " celebrity status" of talent, whether it is a speaking role, exclusivity contracts and number of artistes featured in the commercial.

The above figures are for KENYA ONLY.

  • One Extra country: An additional 50% of the total fees paid.
  • East Africa buy-out rights: An additional 100% of the total fees paid. (Up to and including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan.)
  • Pan Africa buy-out rights: An additional 150% of the total fees paid.
  • International buy-out rights: An additional 200% of the total fees paid

All the above fees are for TWO-YEAR CONTRACTS ONLY . If the client wishes to use the material for longer than two years, new contracts must be negotiated, taking into account that the client will avoid the expense involved in making a new commercial or re-photographing new model(s). Alternatively, outright buyouts can be negotiated. Contracts for less than one year will be quoted on a 'case by case' basis.

CHILDREN'S FEES

  • Children below the age of 3 years will be charged at 50% of the rates listed above.
  • Children between the age of 3 and 12 years will be charged at 75% of the rates listed above.
  • Teens from the age of 13 years will be charged at the same rates as adults .

CHAPERONES

Children below the age of 13 years must be allowed a chaperone per child on set. A fee of KShs 2,000 per day must be budgeted for this service. If the job is being done out of Nairobi a fee of KShs 5,000 will be charged.

WARDROBE

Unless the client is supplying wardrobe, a minimum fee of KShs 1,000 will be charged for the models first outfit and KShs 750 per outfit thereafter. A single item for example a jacket or shirt will be charged at KShs 500. If the artiste's personal wardrobe is altered or damaged during use on the set, the production house should make payment for the article. Wardrobe fees can be paid directly to the model or the agency, but must be on the day of the shoot.

PROPS

If artistes are asked to use personal props for a shoot, production will be charged a minimum fee of KShs 500 per prop. Props include items such as umbrellas, briefcases, sunglasses etc.

HAIR AND NAILS

Obviously models should turn up for shoots with clean nails and hair, but please note that any changes in the style of either, must be provided for or reimbursed. For example - if a model is expected to remove or put braids or extensions, relax hair, shave etc

CASTING FEES

If any of us are used as a casting director, our fees will range from KShs 40,000 - 100,000 (15% - 25% of the total artistes rates), depending on the complexity of the job. This fee is applied to the actual search for artistes who may not exist in our files and/or conducting the casting session.

Production Houses or Advertising Agencies who are not using a freelance Casting Director may be charged a minimum of KShs 5,000 service fee per agent who send in 6 cast or more. In the past, Production Houses and Advertising Agencies have called all the agents in town and asked them to send in large numbers of cast from which only a few people are actually required or selected. We feel that this charge is necessary to cover the expenses incurred in contacting and sending in cast.

We kindly request that you provide us with a complete Brief, Storyboard and L.P.O before any casting is undertaken. The casting fee is due in full after the final selection of cast and prior to the particular day of shoot.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
There are of course a great many grey areas in this business. In order to avoid the confrontations and confusion that have become all too common in this business, we would like to stress the importance of the following:

  • Please fax or send in writing the casting brief, storyboard, artistes' rates and casting rates befor e asking us to send cast. This will help us fully prepare the artistes before auditions and eliminate confusion as to the artiste's role (i.e. principal, extra etc).
  • Please prepare a separate L.P.O for casting (due in with the brief before we send in cast).
  • Please prepare a separate L.P.O for the artistes with specifications on usage and fees, upon final selection of cast (due prior to the day of the shoot).
  • Please provide transport from a convenient location if you require artistes on set before 8:00 am or the location is over 7 Km out of Nairobi city center.
  • Please give us a minimum of two working days notice (full meaning 8:00 am - 5:00 pm), before asking us to send in cast for auditions.
  • Please give us at least two working days notice before asking us to send cast for a shoot.
  • Please try to schedule shoots for children on the weekend or holidays.
  • A representative of the casting or modeling agency must be allowed to be present during casting and/or on set when their artistes are shooting.
  • Please do not make payments to the artistes on set (no matter how small the amount) apart from wardrobe fees. All payments should be made directly to the Agencies that provided you with the artiste(s).
  • Please try and be specific about how many days the shoot will take and how many hours the talent will be required on set. This should be established before the shoot. Time over due to technical or weather hitches must be paid for at a rate of KShs 8,000 - 10,000 per day for featured extras, semi-principals and principals and at the daily rate for agreed for extras.
  • Food and soft drinks must be provided to all cast when on location.
  • Please put "referred by" as opposed to "agent" on the casting sheets, as this has led to misunderstandings when we have sent people who are not officially registered with us.
  • People who attend auditions with friends or family who are registered with an agency must also go through the agency for that specific job, should they be selected.
  • Please note that models should not put their telephone numbers on casting sheets unless by prior arrangement with the agents. Unfortunately, models are being contacted directly by some unscrupulous clients, following attendance of auditions.
  • A 25% fee will be applicable for any work undertaken by a model who is then rejected by the client.
  • Travel days are charged at 50% of the daily rate.
  • Model Release forms should be presented to the agency in advance of the job. Models should always sign model release forms prior to shooting. Model release forms must be specific as to the image usage and applicable payments.
  • Fees should be paid on completion and approval of the job by the client, but must be settled within 30 days of invoicing. On no account should material be aired or published before the talent has been paid.

We look forward to working with you.

Thanking you for your understanding and co-operation.

Yours faithfully

  • Tonni Rimwah Konga Mbandu
